Responsibilities: The Registered Nurse (RN) Infection Preventionist is responsible for the prevention, investigation, monitoring and reporting of the spread of diseases in the long term care facility. Conducts, monitors and evaluates the Infection Prevention surveillance program to reduce the risk of transmission of infectious diseases to residents, visitors, volunteers, physicians and employees. Works closely with facility leadership and utilizes resources to implement Infection Prevention policies, procedures and programs. Provides Infection Prevention education, conducts epidemiological investigations and recommends improvements. In conjunction with the Infection Control Committee and in consultation with facility leadership, may institute any appropriate control measures, isolation procedures or studies when there is an immediate infection risk to residents or personnel. Accountabilities 1. Plan, develop, implement, evaluate, and oversee the infection prevention and control program in accordance with current state and federal regulations and guidelines governing long term care facilities. Facilitate collaboration with subject matter experts to develop infection prevention related practices, policies and procedures. Review, modify, and interpret policies and procedures, as necessary.2. Review all infections acquired and nosocomial infections monthly and quarterly, investigate unusual epidemics, clusters of infections and/or infections due to unusual pathogens, make care center rounds to ensure techniques and procedures are performed in accordance with standards set by the QAPI Committee according to the Infection Control Policy.3. Monitor antibiotic use and promote antibiotic stewardship. Provide education to physicians and nurses on antibiotic stewardship.4. Assist and oversee the tracking, administering, promoting and recordkeeping of required employee immunizations and recommended resident immunizations including, flu and pneumococcal immunization status. Order inventories of vaccines to be administered to staff and residents in a timely manner.5. Establish and maintain an infection surveillance program that is based on standardized definitions of infections.6. Establish, implement and monitor data collection tools for process and outcome surveillance.7. Report to DON, Medical Director, and the Infection Control Committee/QAPI Committee of problems and progress in preventing and controlling infections; acts as a liaison between all departments. Implements recommendations and preventive measures.8. Serve on, participate in, and attend Infection Prevention and Control Committee, QAPI Committee and interdisciplinary team (IDT) meetings as requested or indicated. Presents data relative to key infection prevention and control initiatives including antibiotic stewardship, healthcare acquired infections, immunization programs and outbreaks.9. Participate in the completion of an annual Infection Prevention/Control risk assessment/surveillance plan based on the population served, services provided and analysis of surveillance data, identify opportunities for improvement and oversees improvement activities. Conduct regular surveillance of facility departments for adherence to infection prevention practices.10. Develop infection prevention and control programs to include: orientation program for personnel tailored to the clinical and educational level of the target group; continuing in-service education programs for facility staff to ensure that infection prevention policies and practices are adhered to and that all nursing services personnel follow established infection prevention and control practices and aseptic techniques when caring for residents.11. Educate residents and visitors on standard and transmission-based precautions.12. Assist in coordinating infection related employee health issues and employee exposure follow-up with Employee Health.13. Ensure that the facility is in compliance with current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and local regulations concerning infection prevention and control.14. Collaborate with environmental services in developing and implementing guidelines for environmental cleaning and disinfection and with laundry services in developing infection prevention and control procedures for handling of clean and soiled laundry/linen, equipment cleaning, etc.15. Assist all departments in evaluating and classifying routine and job-related functions to ensure that tasks involving exposure to blood/body fluids are properly identified.16. Report all reportable diseases to Fresno County, California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and other agencies as appropriate.17. Perform administrative and other job-related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education• Associate's Degree in Nursing required• Certificate of Infection Prevention Training in Long Term Care Infection Control by a recognized association such as the Association for Professionals in Infection Control (APIC) or the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) required Experience• 3 years of relevant experience in a Long Term Care setting required• Working knowledge of epidemiology, microbiology, infectious disease and aseptic technique to include standard and transmission based precautions required Licenses and Certifications• RN - Current and valid Registered Nurse license to work within the state of California required• BLS - Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers by American Heart Association (AHA) required Disclaimers:• Pay ranges listed are an estimate and subject to change.
